Bobcat 01-17 Code: Which Loaders Show It and What M0117 Means

Bobcat 01-17 is the air filter plugged code; on older loaders 10-17 is the charge filter, and P0117 is an engine coolant sensor fault.

On Bobcat loaders that show codes on the hourmeter/code display, 01-17 means the engine air filter is plugged. M-Series loaders report the same condition as M0117. Bobcat lists neither as a shutdown code, so you can work to a safe stopping point and service the air cleaner before the next shift.

The exception is an M-Series machine that also shows M0144 or M0145. Those are Bobcat’s air filter derate codes. Derate means the controller is already holding engine output back, and that machine should stop production work.

Which Bobcat machines show 01-17, and which show M0117?

Each format belongs to a machine family. Two families have no air filter entry in Bobcat’s code list at all.

A “Not listed” row only means the 2020 PDF has no entry for that family. The PDF dates from 2020. For current codes, the Machine Diagnostics lookup on Bobcat’s site takes the serial number and the code together. Where the plate sits and what the lookup returns are covered in looking a Bobcat code up by serial number.

Reading 01-17 off an older hourmeter panel

On the S220, press and hold the LIGHTS button for two seconds. The service codes come up in the hourmeter/code display. If more than one code is active, they scroll one after another.

Let the display run through the whole set and write each code down. The call changes when 01-17 has company.

The digits that carry from 01-17 to M0117

Line the two lists up and the pairs repeat. The S175/S185 manual lists 01-16 and 01-17 as air filter not connected and air filter plugged. Bobcat’s 10-20 list gives M0116 and M0117 those same meanings on M-Series loaders.

Vector chart mapping Bobcat 01-16 and 01-17 to M0116 and M0117, with M0117 identified as air filter plugged
01-17 becomes M0117 on M-Series Bobcat loaders, while 10-17 becomes M1017 for the hydraulic charge filter.

The hydraulic charge filter follows suit: 10-17 on the older loaders, M1017 on M-Series.

That match holds for codes both lists contain. A code missing from your machine’s list has no meaning you can work out from its digits.

Hybrid forms such as “M04-15” turn up on some parts-seller blogs. None of the three Bobcat documents above uses that form. The rest of the two-part system is covered in how Bobcat’s two-part codes are built.

One swapped digit, or a search for “0117” on a newer machine, lands on a different system.

P0117 comes from the engine controller, not the loader controller. On the V2 engine it reports the coolant temperature sensor reading out of range low, and no air filter touches that circuit.

Whether a hydraulic filter code is a scheduled change on your model is covered in whether a filter plugged code is your service interval.

Can you keep running with an air filter code?

Bobcat’s own documents treat 01-17 and M0117 as a filter-service signal. The S175/S185 manual says to change the air filter element only when the air cleaner icon in the right panel is on.

In the 10-20 list, loader stop-work codes carry the word “Shutdown,” as in M0415 Engine Oil Pressure Shutdown. M0117 does not.

Work to a safe stopping point, park on level ground with the attachment down, and book the filter service before the next shift. On M-Series, M0144 or M0145 changes that call: stop production work.

Codes that arrive in a group are a different case. One 873G owner posted 01-17 alongside 04-21, 05-21, 07-21, 08-21 and 09-21 on a cold start, all out-of-range-high codes, and the thread records no confirmed fix. When unrelated systems report at once, a filter is the last thing to buy.

Ask a Bobcat dealer technician: “Is the restriction switch reading true restriction, or is one shared wiring fault setting all of these codes?” The loader codes that do carry shutdown wording are gathered in which Bobcat codes mean stop work.

Hazard: Air cleaner access puts hands next to exhaust parts that stay hot after shutdown. Under 29 CFR 1926.600(a)(3)(i), end-loader buckets must be fully lowered or blocked during repair, with controls in neutral, the motor stopped and brakes set. Follow the O&M manual for your serial number, or have a Bobcat dealer technician do the service.

When new elements don’t clear the code

In the S175 and S185 service manual, the inner filter element comes next when 01-17 is still showing after the outer filter is replaced. Once both elements are new, the next checks are worked through in why the code stays on after a new filter.

Call the dealer with the number off the serial plate and every code the display scrolled through. Ask first whether 01-17 or M0117 appears in the code list for that serial number.
