Current John Deere DEF Fault Derate Timeline by Software

John Deere DEF derate timing depends on software. The 330G and 332G carry DEF; the 320G and 324G need none. EPA’s guidance uses a different clock.

Deere skid steer DEF fault: how long until it derates

The short answer

Only some John Deere skid steers carry DEF: the large-frame 330G and 332G (confirm by PIN) and the 330 and 334 P-Tier. Deere says earlier software could restrict a machine to idle in as little as about 4 hours after certain DEF or SCR faults. Its updated software gives about 20 hours, then roughly 30% of rated engine power. Which one your machine runs depends on whether the update is installed.

SoftwareTime to restrictionRestriction
Earlier Deere softwareAbout 4 hoursIdle only
Updated Deere softwareAbout 20 hoursAbout 30% of rated engine power

Where to jump

Derating now: first-hour steps (Section 6). Which models have DEF (Section 2). Repair cost (Section 7).

ℹ️ Safety Note: Engine power can drop mid-task, slowing hydraulic response; with a raised load, on a trailer ramp or at a trench edge, that risks a crush or rollover. Exhaust and aftertreatment parts stay hot after shutdown. Park on level ground, bucket lowered, and follow the operator’s manual and a qualified Deere technician.

Which John Deere skid steers actually have DEF

Deere’s G-Series brochure limits DEF to the 330G and 332G, and its service guides list DEF items from PIN F300253.

DEF is listed for selected large-frame Deere machines, including the 330G, 332G, 330 P-Tier and 334 P-Tier. Confirm the exact machine configuration by PIN before assuming your skid steer has a DEF system.

Derate timeline: old software, updated software, EPA guidance

John Deere DEF Fault Derate vector timeline comparing earlier software idle-only restriction, updated software 30% power restriction, and EPA voluntary guidance for nonroad diesel equipment.
Earlier Deere software could idle a machine in about 4 hours, while updated software provides about 20 hours before a roughly 30% power restriction. EPA guidance is regulatory context and may not match the software schedule installed on a particular machine.

What Deere says

Deere began releasing updates in November 2025 and expects about 80% of in-scope updates by end of 2026. Owners must accept the prompt; dealers and Operations Center PRO Service also install.

Which schedule is yours

Ask your dealer which software release your PIN runs, and whether the window counts engine hours; Deere has not published a model list.

The pending proposal

EPA proposed warnings instead of derates for new nonroad engines on July 14, 2026 (EPA rule page); it is not final, and EPA is separately weighing in-use guidance.

🗺️ State Check: California’s Air Resources Board opposed removing off-road derates in August 2026 comments; no other state rule was found. In California, ask your dealer which schedule applies.

What actually triggers a DEF derate on these machines

Three conditions EPA names

Low DEF level is one of three conditions EPA’s nonroad SCR guidance ties to power reduction; the others are poor DEF quality and tampering.

Failed sensors and faults

EPA says failed sensors can trigger a derate even with enough DEF. Owner reports on 331G, 332G and 333G machines, dates not captured, describe DEF header, wiring and temperature-sensor repairs; none confirms a cause for your machine.

Cold starts and contamination

One 332G owner reports a DEF temperature fault and derate countdown after a cold start. One 331G owner reports diesel in the DEF tank; stop and call a qualified technician.

How to read a Deere DEF code (controller, SPN, FMI)

Reading the format

Under SAE J1939-73, a fault code pairs an SPN, which names the parameter, with an FMI, which names the failure mode.

We found no public Deere or SAE definition for DCU 523636.00, DCU 523630.02 or DCU 4341.05, codes owners report with derates, so none is given; treat each as needing a dealer scan tool.

Active vs stored codes

Owner reports describe active codes that stayed until the cause was fixed.

✅ Do This: Write down the PIN, engine hours, each code with its controller label, active or stored, DEF level and warning text before calling a Deere dealer.

First hour of a DEF warning: what to do and what not to

⚠️ Hazard: A derate can cut power with a load raised or on a ramp. Lower the bucket on level ground; leave DEF-system work to a qualified Deere technician.

Refill and record

Refill with the DEF your operator’s manual specifies, record the Section 5 items, and call the dealer.

Why delete and override cost more

📜 The Rule: 40 CFR 1068.101(b)(1) bars removing or disabling emission controls and lists running without appropriate-quality urea as an example. Penalties reach $5,911 per machine, or $59,114 for manufacturers and dealers (40 CFR 19.4, checked Oct 14, 2026). Repair is exempt only if function is restored.

The only emergency provision, 40 CFR 1039.665, covers manufacturer-approved devices where human life is at risk. See our penalty table breakdown.

John Deere DEF fault derate FAQ

1. How long can a John Deere skid steer run with a DEF fault?

Updated Deere software gives about 20 hours before a DEF fault derate restriction; earlier software could idle the machine in about 4.

2. Which John Deere skid steers have DEF?

Deere lists DEF on the 330G and 332G (confirm by PIN) and the 330 and 334 P-Tier; the 320G and 324G need none.

3. Does a DEF fault derate always go to idle?

No. Earlier software could restrict to idle; updated software leaves about 30% of rated engine power after about 20 hours.

4. Is empty DEF the only derate cause?

No. EPA ties derates to low DEF level, poor quality and tampering, and says failed sensors can trigger one with enough DEF.

5. Can I clear a Deere DEF fault code myself?

Owner reports describe active DEF codes staying until the cause was fixed. Read them with a dealer scan tool. Next step: call a Deere dealer.

6. How do I get Deere’s DEF software update?

Deere prompts connected machines and owners must accept; dealers and Operations Center PRO Service can also install the DEF software update.

7. Is a John Deere DEF delete legal?

No. Federal tampering rules bar disabling emission controls, with penalties up to $5,911 per machine for most owners. Next step: have a Deere dealer repair the DEF system.

8. What does a DEF fault derate repair cost?

Parts by PIN plus dealer labor plus downtime; our guide’s assumed inputs give $45.98 an hour with one operator idled.

9. Will the EPA proposal end DEF derates on my Deere?

The July 2026 proposal targets new nonroad engines and is not final; EPA is separately considering in-use guidance.

Next steps for your Deere

Your machine is warning or already restricted, so pin down the clock first. Next question: cost. Read skid steer downtime cost per hour, then run the Equipment Cost-Per-Hour Calculator with price, residual value and hours kept; model specs are in Deere construction equipment specs by configuration. Ask a Deere dealer which software release your PIN runs and for written parts and labor. Documented sources, not first-hand operation.
