Is There an Official John Deere Fault Code List?
John Deere fault code list: Deere ties its manuals to your PIN, and PRO Service lets owners view codes. Here’s what to record before you call.

Table of Contents
Is there a John Deere fault code list?
No single public, all-models John Deere fault code list was found (checked October 14, 2026). Deere publishes diagnostic information in machine-specific manuals and in Operations Center PRO Service, matched to your machine’s PIN. Write down the full code, the controller and the engine hours, then check your operator’s manual, a technical manual or your dealer. If a stop-level warning is showing, shut down as your operator’s manual directs.
| You need | Go to | Section |
|---|---|---|
| What a code means | Manual or PRO Service | 3 |
| The right manual | Your PIN | 4 |
| To read the code | SPN and FMI | 5 |
| To call the dealer | The capture card | 6 |
PIN: Deere’s product identification number, its serial number for a machine.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Running a machine through an active stop-level warning risks sudden loss of engine, steering, brake or hydraulic function. Have a qualified technician diagnose and repair.
Why a one-size Deere code chart fails
Deere filters repair content by year and model, with PIN-specific manuals, per its July 31, 2025 launch release as reprinted by trade press. A chart that treats every code alike cannot know which machine you own, and a model name alone doesn’t settle it; see what the P-Tier name does and does not tell you.

On October 14, 2026 we reviewed what a search for this phrase returned. One parts retailer’s blog, dated November 5, 2025, tabulates 12 SPN and FMI definitions as common to a skid steer and a tractor; the text we retrieved shows no Deere or SAE source for them. Deere stopped selling Customer Service ADVISOR directly to owners on July 31, 2025, so pages still sending owners to buy it are out of date.
Where Deere puts its code definitions
| Source | What it holds | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Operator’s manual | Operating, maintenance and safety information | Deere’s publications |
| Technical manual | Service and diagnostic detail, by model and PIN range | Deere’s bookstores |
| Operations Center PRO Service | View, refresh, clear codes; PIN-specific manuals; schematics | Annual license; hardware to read codes |
| Dealer | Service ADVISOR; remote tools | Call or visit |

📋 Verified Spec: Operations Center PRO Service license, U.S.: annual, starting at $195 per machine at launch on July 31, 2025 (Deere’s release as reprinted by trade press). Deere’s PRO Service page says viewing codes needs a smart connector or 4G modem. Check Deere for today’s price.
Deere’s repair page says Customer Service ADVISOR remains with dealerships; with the owner’s permission, an independent provider can use PRO Service. Ag and turf owners use the Technical Information Store; construction and forestry owners use the C&F bookstore.
Match the manual to your serial number
Owners add a machine to PRO Service by serial number, which brings up content for that machine (trade coverage of Deere’s release). Our guide to matching by serial number or PIN shows the same habit at the parts counter.
The same Deere model name can be two different machines; our John Deere construction equipment specs by configuration shows it across generations. Buying used? Get the PIN from the seller first.
How an SPN and FMI code is built
SAE J1939 sets the structure heavy-equipment controllers use to report faults. An SPN (suspect parameter number) names the part or signal at fault. An FMI (failure mode identifier) names how it failed. SAE J1939-73 covers the messages that broadcast active codes and lamp status.
What a number means comes from your machine’s manual or Deere’s tools, never this page. See our John Deere SPN and FMI codes guide.
📜 The Rule: SAE J1939/73_202412, revised December 3, 2024, is the current revision of the diagnostics standard. Checked October 14, 2026.
What to write down before you call
Your operator’s manual and your dealer decide whether a machine can keep working, not this article. Before calling, record:
- Model and PIN, and engine hours
- Controller named on the display
- SPN, FMI and occurrence count, if shown
- Active or stored
- A photo of the screen
- What the machine was doing, and any derate or shutdown
⚠️ Hazard: Opening panels, unplugging connectors or working under a raised implement to read a code can cause crush, electrical or hydraulic injury. Read the display and photograph it.
🧮 Run the Numbers: Compare an idle hour with a rental day rate using skid steer downtime cost per hour.
✅ Do This: Read your card to a Deere dealer and ask which manual matches your PIN.
Clearing codes and what stays off-limits
Deere says Operations Center PRO Service lets owners view, refresh and clear diagnostic trouble codes. Clearing removes the message, not the fault, and it is no way past a derate or shutdown.
📜 The Rule: The Clean Air Act prohibits tampering with emissions controls and making, selling or installing devices meant to defeat them, including on nonroad engines (EPA’s defeat-device initiative, page updated December 15, 2025; checked October 14, 2026).
✅ Do This: Ask a Deere dealer technician what an emissions-related code means before anything is cleared.
John Deere fault code FAQ
1. Is there an official John Deere fault code list?
No single public, all-models John Deere fault code list was found on October 13, 2026; Deere ties diagnostic information to each machine’s PIN.
2. Where can I look up a John Deere fault code?
Look it up in your operator’s manual, a technical manual, Operations Center PRO Service, or through your Deere dealer.
3. What is Operations Center PRO Service?
Deere’s owner repair tool; it replaced Customer Service ADVISOR on July 31, 2025 and offers PIN-specific manuals and diagnostic trouble codes.
4. How do I find the right manual?
Use your serial number or PIN, not the model name, because the same John Deere model name can cover different machines.
5. What do SPN and FMI mean?
SPN (suspect parameter number) names the signal at fault; FMI (failure mode identifier) names how it failed.
6. Are John Deere codes the same on every machine?
No. Deere filters repair content by year and model, so use the manual matched to your machine rather than a general chart.
7. Can I read John Deere codes without a dealer?
Owners can view codes through Operations Center PRO Service, which needs connectivity hardware; dealers also read codes.
8. What should I write down before calling?
Note the model, PIN, engine hours, controller, SPN, FMI, and whether the code is active or stored.
9. Can owners clear a John Deere fault code?
Deere says PRO Service lets owners clear codes, but clearing is not a repair. Next step: have a dealer technician find the cause.
10. Is it legal to remove emissions controls on a Deere?
No. The Clean Air Act prohibits tampering with emissions controls, including on nonroad engines. Next step: ask your dealer.
Next step: record the code, then use the right source
Record the code using the card in Section 6, then ask your Deere dealer technician which manual matches your PIN. For specs matched to your configuration, see our John Deere construction equipment specs by configuration.
