Read John Deere SPN FMI Codes Right, Field by Field
John Deere SPN FMI codes name a signal and how it failed. Deere’s table words FMI 0–19 and 31 and has no entries for 20–30.

Table of Contents
On a John Deere, the SPN says which signal or circuit has a problem, and the FMI says how it failed. Deere’s operator’s-manual table lists SPN 28 as Digital Throttle Signal and FMI 3 as Out of Range High, so SPN 28 with FMI 3 reads: throttle signal, out of range high. Which controller reported it, its count and whether it is active decide what happens next.

How to read a John Deere SPN and FMI code
SPN: the signal or circuit
SPN is the suspect parameter number, an SAE J1939 term, and SAE J1939-73 is the standard’s diagnostics layer. Deere’s trouble code listing names a signal or circuit for each SPN, such as SPN 100, Engine Oil Pressure Signal.
FMI: the failure type

FMI is the failure mode identifier. Deere’s listing keeps the two in separate columns; look each up on its own.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Working a machine through an active Stop-level alert can risk losing engine or machine function at an unsafe moment, such as with an implement raised or on a slope. This article explains reading codes, not repairs; follow the operator’s manual and have a qualified technician diagnose faults.
Read a Deere fault code in five fields
Before touching anything, write these five fields down:

- Controller: the device that reported the code
- SPN: the signal or circuit
- FMI: the failure type
- Count: how many times the code has occurred
- Status: active or inactive
Controller
Deere’s display help lists codes by device, meaning each control unit on the CAN bus; it documents the 4640 display, so check your machine’s manual. Deere’s 210 P-Tier changed engine between generations, so confirm generation and serial range first, as the John Deere construction equipment specs by configuration guide lays out.
SPN and FMI
📋 Verified Spec: SPN 28 = Digital Throttle Signal; FMI 3 = Out of Range High. Applies to: Deere’s operator’s-manual engine diagnostic listing, file-dated April 12, 2010 (machine not named; not all codes apply to all engine applications). Source: Deere trouble code listing OMRG38059. Verified October 13, 2026.
That is an example of reading a code, not a repair path; assume dealer-level diagnosis.
Deere quick-reference pages, as copied online, write pairs like 158.03 or 2000.09; confirm the form in your manual.
Six-digit SPNs such as 522458 (Fuel Dosing Pump Data in Deere’s table) sit in the manufacturer-defined range, so only Deere’s table defines them.
Count, status and alert tier
The section on active and stored codes covers them.
Deere FMI wording, number by number
Deere’s table uses its own labels for each FMI number, and third-party lists often word the same numbers differently.
| FMI | Deere wording | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Extremely High | OMRG38059 |
| 1 | Extremely Low | OMRG38059 |
| 2 | Invalid | OMRG38059 |
| 3 | Out of Range High | OMRG38059 |
| 4 | Out of Range Low | OMRG38059 |
| 5 | High Resistance | OMRG38059 |
| 6 | Low Resistance | OMRG38059 |
| 7 | Mismatch | OMRG38059 |
| 8 | Signal Missing | OMRG38059 |
| 9 | Loss of Communication | OMRG38059 |
| 10 to 14 | Change Abnormal; Activated; Error; Fault; Incorrect Message | OMRG38059 |
| 15 to 18 | Slightly High; Moderately High; Slightly Low; Moderately Low | OMRG38059 |

FMI 3 to 9: the labels you will meet most
Read the label from your machine’s own document; a label alone never makes a code owner-serviceable.
FMI 15 to 18: Deere’s severity ladder
These run from slightly to moderately, high and low.
FMI 31: condition exists
The label carries no direction or severity.
Active vs stored codes, and Stop, Service and Info
Deere’s display help says the trouble code list shows current and stored codes and sorts them by status, count and type; it documents the 4640 display, so check your machine’s manual.
Active and stored
Status separates active from inactive codes.
Count
Count is how many times the code has occurred; write it down.
Stop, Service and Info
Deere’s display sorts codes by type: Stop, Service and Info. A Deere combine listing from 2007 (9670 and 9770 STS) labels its priorities Stop, Warning and Information instead, so the label set changes by machine and era.
⚠️ Hazard: An alert label names a level, not an operating rule. The operator’s manual says what each level requires; handle a Stop-level alert as it directs, with a qualified technician.
✅ Do This: Deere’s display has a Clear All Codes button. Before using any clear function, record controller, SPN, FMI, count, status and alert type, and give it to a Deere dealer or qualified technician.
Derate and shutdown codes: what not to do
Deere’s engine listing names its derate and protection codes: SPN 1569 Engine Power Derate, 1109 Engine Protection Approaching, 1110 Engine Protection and 189 Engine Speed Derate.
Derate and protection codes
Whether a machine may keep working with one active is for the operator’s manual and a qualified technician to answer. This article gives no steps for them; treat them as dealer-level diagnosis.
Why clearing or defeating a code is not a fix
🔍 Why It Fails: A code is a report from a controller. Clearing it from the display does not change what the controller measured, so a fault whose cause remains can set again.
📜 The Rule: The Clean Air Act bars knowingly removing or disabling an emission control, and making, selling or installing parts that bypass or defeat one (CAA § 203(a)(3)(A) and (B)). EPA says tampering includes removing DPF, SCR or EGR hardware and altering software or calibrations, with no exemption for off-road-only use of an originally certified engine. So deleting or tuning around a fault is not a repair option. Source: EPA’s guidance on tampering and defeat devices, updated September 15, 2025; cited as of October 12, 2026.
For what a delete risks, see our guide to EPA penalties for a DPF delete; it is written for Bobcat machines, but the federal prohibitions EPA describes apply to any EPA-certified engine.
⚠️ Hazard: Derate and protection codes mean the machine is limiting itself. Clearing the code, or altering the engine’s emissions controls or software to get past it, leaves the fault in place and breaks federal law. A qualified technician should diagnose it.
Who to call and what to hand over
✅ Do This: Call a Deere dealer or qualified heavy equipment technician with the controller, SPN, FMI, count, status, alert type, and your machine’s model and serial number. Ask which diagnostic manual and tools apply to that serial number.
Where to verify a Deere code before you act
Deere’s listing says to contact the servicing dealer when its listed actions fail.
Source order: manual, diagnostic manual, dealer tools
Start with your operator’s manual, then ask the dealer for the diagnostic manual and tools for your serial number. Online lists come last.
Where third-party lists disagree with Deere’s table
Documented reports indicate that unsourced lists can contradict Deere’s table. Three observations, all checked October 12, 2026:
- One third-party table lists SPN 108 as a coolant temperature signal; Deere lists SPN 108 as Barometric Pressure Signal.
- One Q&A page gives SPN 28 FMI 3 as two different sensor faults on the same page; Deere’s table says Digital Throttle Signal and Out of Range High.
- Third-party pages attach action labels such as “critical stop” to specific code pairs; Deere’s FMI table assigns wording, not actions.

Before you act on a Deere code
You can now read a code in five fields; next, check it against your machine’s own documents. Whether to keep working through an active alert is for your operator’s manual and a qualified technician, so give a Deere dealer the five fields plus your model and serial number. Identify generation first with the John Deere specs by configuration guide.
