G-Tier and L-Series numbers are not P-Tier numbers
Several used-listing pages print 30,520–32,827 lb and 34,715–37,174 lb. Those ranges equal Deere’s own 544L and 624L ranges, so treat them as L-Series data. The 544 G-Tier is a third set of figures, covered in the used-buying section.
Power and hydraulics: 166 hp vs 192 hp, 58 vs 69 gpm

The 2026 544 P-Tier engine question
| Source | Checked | Engine | Fuel capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deere 544 P-Tier page | 2026-10-12 | PowerTech PVS 6068 | 298 L (79 gal) |
| West Central Equipment, 2026 544 P-Tier | 2026-10-12 | PowerTech PSS 4045 | 265 L (70 gal) |
| Deere 624 P-Tier page | 2026-10-12 | PowerTech PVS 6068 | 299 L (79 gal) |
| West Central Equipment, 2026 624 P-Tier | 2026-10-12 | PowerTech PVS 6068 | 227 L (60 gal) |
Deere’s industrial-engine pages describe the 4045 family as a 4.5 L, 4-cylinder line, but its use in the 544 P-Tier is unverified, and one dealer page lists both engines for the same machine. Confirm the engine model by serial number with a Deere dealer parts or service desk before relying on either column.
Hauling each loader: width, height and tie-down rules
Width over tires against the 102-inch baseline
The 624P transport width is 104.6 in. on Deere’s figure, so wide-load rules for your route come into play; the 544 P-Tier measures under the baseline on the same figure.
| Machine | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 544 P-Tier | 2,546 mm ÷ 25.4 = 100.2 in. | 1.8 in. under 102 in. |
| 624 P-Tier | 2,657 mm ÷ 25.4 = 104.6 in. | 2.6 in. over 102 in. |
Source: Deere spec pages, width over standard 20.5 R25 tires, checked 2026-10-12.
That figure leaves out mirrors, fenders and attachments, so use the transport dimensions in the Deere operator’s manual. The John Deere wheel loader models guide covers the rest of the range.
📜 The Rule: 23 CFR 658.15(a) provides that no state may set a width limit other than 102 in. on the National Network, and (c) allows states to issue special-use permits above 102 in. Whether a wider load moves is a state decision. Verified 2026-10-12; eCFR current as of 10/07/2026.
Height on the trailer deck
Height over cab is 3,330 mm (131.1 in.) for the 544 and 3,400 mm (133.9 in.) for the 624. Add the trailer’s deck height, which you supply. No federal height limit was verified for this article, so the height rule comes from each state.
Federal securement for wheel loaders
📜 The Rule: 49 CFR 393.130 covers wheeled or tracked machinery of 10,000 lb or more and names front-end loaders. Paragraph (b)(2) requires an articulated vehicle to be restrained against articulation in transit. Paragraph (c)(1) requires at least four tiedowns restraining lateral, forward, rearward and vertical movement, placed per (c)(2) as close as practicable to the front and rear or at designed mounting points. Verified 2026-10-12; eCFR current as of 10/08/2026.
Both loaders exceed 10,000 lb on every weight in Section 2.
⚠️ Hazard: An articulated loader left free at the hinge can swing in transit, and a failed chain or binder can release the load onto people near the trailer, causing crush and struck-by injury. A licensed heavy-haul carrier or certified rigger plans and performs the securement.
What states do differently
🗺️ State Check: The federal baseline is 102 in.; states issue the permits and set their own thresholds. Look up your route’s width, height and weight thresholds and the issuing office.
| State | Width without permit | Height limit | Permit issued by | Source, checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| California | 8 ft 6 in. (102 in.) | 14 ft | Caltrans | Caltrans, retrieved 2026-10-09 via our wheel-loader guide |
| Four more states |
🧮 Run the Numbers: Enter each model’s width, height, length and weight into the Machine Transport Dimension & Permit Checker.
✅ Do This: Ask a licensed heavy-haul carrier or certified rigger to confirm the permit requirement for your route and the securement plan for your actual trailer, using the operator’s manual transport dimensions.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 544 P-Tier | 2021 | 255 | $209,500 | Spokane, WA |
| 544 P-Tier | 2022 | 1,713 | $173,100 | Canastota, NY |
| 544 P-Tier | 2023 | 2,501 | $155,300 | Canastota, NY |
| 624 P-Tier | 2022 | 4,685 | $129,000 | Harris, MN |
| 624 P-Tier | 2022 | 5,466 | $128,000 | Womelsdorf, PA |
| 624 P-Tier | 2022 | not shown | $175,000 | Turlock, CA |
These are asking prices from dealer listings, not sale prices. Machinery Trader shows 198 listings for the 624 P-Tier from $64,500 to $314,150. Two implausible listings were excluded.
Rental: what is and is not published
One 624 P-Tier dealer listing in Des Moines, IA shows $700 per day, $2,100 per week and $6,300 per month; its date is not shown, and no 544 P-Tier rate was retrieved. Treat it as a single undated data point.
🧮 Run the Numbers: The Owning vs. Renting Breakeven Calculator needs the purchase price, your annual hours and a monthly rental rate.
✅ Do This: Ask a Deere dealer or equipment appraiser for current net pricing on the exact configuration. This article offers no fair-price, financing or tax guidance.
Which loader fits: bucket, reach and trailer limits
Bucket and reach differences
| Criterion | 544 P-Tier | 624 P-Tier | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heaped capacity | 2.3 m³ (3 cu yd) | 2.7 m³ (3.5 cu yd) | 0.4 m³ (0.5 cu yd) |
| Reach at 2,130 mm, 45-degree dump | 1,510 mm (59.4 in.) | 1,590 mm (62.6 in.) | 80 mm (3.1 in.) |
| Pivot-pin height | 3,890 mm (153.1 in.) | 3,960 mm (155.9 in.) | 70 mm (2.8 in.) |
| Maximum turning circle | 11,580 mm (38.0 ft) | 12,040 mm (39.5 ft) | 460 mm (1.5 ft) |
Source: Deere spec pages, checked 2026-10-12. Both models list a bucket range of 1.9–4.0 m³ (2.5–5.25 cu yd); Deere does not name the bucket behind the heaped-capacity field.
The 70 mm pivot-pin gap means the two machines reach almost the same height, so the wheel loader size to buy turns on width, power, flow and price.
When the 544 P-Tier’s smaller footprint matters
Choose on these documented thresholds: a width of 100.2 in. against the 102-in. baseline, a list price $41,140 lower, and 4,195 lb less base weight.
When the 624 P-Tier’s extra flow and weight matter
The 624 offers 26 more horsepower (192 − 166), 11 gpm more pump flow and 0.4 m³ more heaped capacity. Deere does not publish a productivity comparison in these fields, so none is claimed here.
Buying used: serial checks, hours and the G-Tier mix-up
Read the serial and ask for the engine model
Listings show serial prefixes such as 1DW544PA (544 P-Tier), 1DW624PA (624 P-Tier) and 1YN544GA (544 G-Tier); this is an observation, not a decoding. Ask the seller for the full serial and the engine model, since Section 3 shows 2026 544 P-Tier listings that differ from Deere’s page.
G-Tier, P-Tier and L-Series are different machines
| Machine | Net power | Published weight | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 544 G-Tier | 125 kW (168 hp) at 1,800 rpm | 12,993–13,556 kg (28,646–29,886 lb) | Deere Latin America page; |
| 544 P-Tier | 123 kW (166 hp) at 1,700 rpm | 30,520–30,598 lb | Deere U.S. page |
| 544L | Not retrieved | 30,520–32,827 lb | Deere 544L page |
Checked 2026-10-12. For what the tiers mean, see John Deere P-Tier explained.
Hours against asking price
The six used listings in Section 5 span 255 to 5,466 hr. Match the hour meter to the service records, and treat any gap as a question for the seller.
✅ Do This: Ask a Deere dealer technician or equipment appraiser for a pre-purchase inspection and the engine model by serial number. Ask the dealer about open campaigns on that serial.
