John Deere 310 Backhoe Problems, Sourced Series by Series

John Deere 310 backhoe problems, sorted by series: owner threads, auction condition notes and recall-check steps for the 310 through 310SL.

John Deere 310 Backhoe Problems by series shown with labeled hydraulic, reverser, electrical, and parking-brake issue areas on a backhoe loader

John Deere 310 backhoe problems follow the series. Across 50 owner threads, 310 and 310A posts lead with hydraulics, 310C and 310D with reverser and shifting faults, and 310SE to 310SG with hydraulic, drivetrain and starting faults. 310J and 310SJ split between parking brake, shutdown and hydraulics. Records for the 310K and later are too few to rank. Confirm your series by serial number first.

Section 2 shows how. Deere now sells the 310 as G-Tier and P-Tier; John Deere construction equipment specs by configuration carries current specs.

ℹ️ Safety Note: Raised loader arms, booms and stabilizers can drop onto a person when hydraulic pressure is lost, and fluid from a pinhole leak can penetrate skin and needs immediate surgical treatment. The information here is for general understanding; have a qualified Deere technician do this work and follow the operator’s manual.

How to tell which 310 series you own

The serial number, which Deere calls the PIN, sets the series; a listing’s label can disagree.

Before diagnosing John Deere 310 Backhoe Problems, confirm the series from the PIN plate rather than relying on a seller’s model label.

When the label and the serial number disagree

A 2004 unit sold as a 310SG on August 10, 2021 carried a T0310GX serial, the prefix above for the 310G. Trust the plate over the label; tier badges describe features, not age, per how Deere’s tier names work. Section 6 lists K-Series engine models as a second check.

✅ Do This: Photograph the PIN plate and ask a Deere dealer to confirm series and engine for that PIN.

310 and 310A problems: hydraulics, drive and starting

The oldest family has the thinnest record: seven threads, none on the 310B.

Weak or slow hydraulics

Three threads cover hydraulics: a control-valve leak (1974 unit), a 310A whose hydraulics quit without warning, and a swing-cylinder rebuild on a 1975 unit (March 2025). A Yesterday’s Tractors thread on a 1976 310A names a plugged suction screen; its outcome was not found.

No-drive and starting reports

A 3-cylinder 310 stopped moving until its owner found a missing cotter pin on the reverser linkage (TractorByNet, about October 2012). An early-1970s unit died with a click and no dash lights.

⚠️ Hazard: Raised loader arms can drop and a pinhole leak can inject fluid through skin. Do not open lines, check linkage from beneath, or hunt leaks by hand; a Deere technician should diagnose these faults.

📜 The Rule: 29 CFR 1926.600(a)(3)(i) requires construction employers to block or crib held-aloft equipment before anyone works under it (eCFR text, current to October 9, 2026; verified October 15, 2026).

310C and 310D reverser and torque converter reports

These two series supply 24 of the 50 threads. The reverser is the forward-reverse unit; owners discuss it with the torque converter.

A reverser fault can interrupt power between the torque converter and wheels, producing a John Deere 310 Backhoe Problems no-drive symptom.

Reverser and no-drive reports

Reverser, shifting and no-drive posts lead with 8 threads: a 310D that would not move until the brake switch was cycled (TractorByNet, January 2013), another needing that cycling with a chattering brake relay, and a bent solenoid that engaged reverse but not forward (April 7, 2022).

Hydraulics, auctions and hours

Hydraulics and leaks follow with 7, including a 310C with weak hydraulics at about 8,000 hours (May 28, 2019). Three of seven auction records carry notes: transmission issues and will not move on a 15,430-hour 310D (August 31, 2021), a hydraulic leak (April 29, 2025) and cracked glass (July 6, 2023). One owner reported a weak reverser near 5,500 hours, another foaming fluid after a rebuild, and a third’s 1992 310D ran 9,500 hours without reverser trouble.

⚠️ Hazard: A reverser, converter or brake fault can leave a machine unable to hold, or move it unexpectedly. Do not diagnose a no-drive 310 on a slope or from beneath it; a Deere technician should, following the operator’s manual.

✅ Do This: Ask the seller who rebuilt the reverser, and when. No fluid capacity, torque or teardown step appears here because none is sourced.

310SE to 310SJ: shifting, no-drive and controller codes

Seventeen threads cover this family, and none shows one dominant fault.

Shifting and no-movement reports

A 310SG’s electronic parking brake engaged in forward at about 10 mph (January 18, 2022). Release faults appear on a 310SJ (July 29, 2022) and a 310J (April 4, 2024). A 310G cranked but would not start with its backup alarm sounding (September 3, 2022).

Controller code strings owners post

Owners write codes as a controller label plus two numbers, such as SDM 177.03 and SDM 224.02 on a 310J (October 26, 2020). We publish no definitions: none is traceable to Deere literature we could access. Read codes per the operator’s manual; they need a Deere dealer’s diagnostic tool.

⚠️ Hazard: A parking-brake or drive fault can leave a machine unable to hold on a slope. Do not test relays, fuses or sensors, bypass a switch or work beneath the machine, and never clear a code and keep working with a drive, brake, steering or hydraulic fault.

Auction condition notes

All six 310SE, 310G and 310SG records carry notes: hydraulic leaks (both 310SE), worn boom pins and axle pivot (310G), outrigger leak-down, tie-rod and transmission issues (310SG). Three of six 310J and 310SJ records do, including a master warning and a non-operational parking brake. Most are government surplus: condition at sale, not failure rates.

What owners and surveys report

Deere says DPF ash removal is dealer-performed when lights or codes call for it. L-Series launch coverage described Final Tier 4 with SCR and DEF; 310SL vs 310SK specs by generation covers the DEF tank.

A 2017 survey of 11 owners (machines bought 2013 to 2015, 300 to 3,200 hours) rated the 310SK 8.6 of 10, with emissions control, fuel efficiency and backhoe lift capacity below 8. Forum tags hold two threads: a return-to-dig setting question (February 28, 2021) and a 2016 310SL with no power steering (November 22, 2024).

Why you can’t delete emissions parts

📜 The Rule: 40 CFR 1068.101(b)(1) bars removing or disabling certified emission controls and lists running without appropriate-quality urea as an example; repair then restoration is exempt (eCFR text, current to October 9, 2026; verified October 15, 2026). See the current EPA tampering penalty table.

🗺️ State Check: This covers the federal baseline only; no state table was compiled. California’s off-road program was not verified here, so look up your state air agency’s nonroad diesel rules.

Recalls are serial-specific

Deere’s recall lookup takes a PIN, so no model-wide statement is possible. Our October 14, 2026 searches found recalls on other Deere products (110 TLB, 2003; 485A backhoe attachment, 2016) and none on the 310, which proves nothing for your PIN.

✅ Do This: Enter your PIN in Deere’s recall lookup and keep a dated screenshot. Ask a Deere technician to read any aftertreatment codes.

What to check before you buy a used 310 backhoe

Questions for the seller, by series

  • All series: PIN plate photo and a dated recall-lookup result.
  • 310C and 310D: who rebuilt the reverser, and when.
  • 310SE to 310SG: hydraulic, outrigger or extendable-stick leaks; tie-rod and pivot wear.
  • 310J and 310SJ: parking-brake release or shutdown history, and whether a dealer read the codes.
  • 310K and later: DPF ash-service records and any DEF or derate alerts.

When to stop and call a technician

Stop when hydraulics, drive, brakes or steering fail, or a code accompanies one. Do not run the machine to see if the fault returns.

Run the hour-value estimate

We found no Deere hour limit. A 15,430-hour 310D with a will-not-move note sold for $7,480 (Oklahoma, August 31, 2021); a 1,339-hour 1996 310D with a hydraulic-leak note sold for $13,750 (Kansas, April 29, 2025). Two sales are not a price guide.

🧮 Run the Numbers: Enter model, year, hours and the condition notes you were given into the Used Equipment Hour-Value Estimator.

✅ Do This: Hire a Deere dealer technician to inspect and an equipment appraiser to value; give each the PIN, any codes and the seller’s answers.
