G-Tier and L-Series numbers are not P-Tier numbers

Several used-listing pages print 30,520–32,827 lb and 34,715–37,174 lb. Those ranges equal Deere’s own 544L and 624L ranges, so treat them as L-Series data. The 544 G-Tier is a third set of figures, covered in the used-buying section.

Deere’s industrial-engine pages describe the 4045 family as a 4.5 L, 4-cylinder line, but its use in the 544 P-Tier is unverified, and one dealer page lists both engines for the same machine. Confirm the engine model by serial number with a Deere dealer parts or service desk before relying on either column.

Hauling each loader: width, height and tie-down rules

Width over tires against the 102-inch baseline

The 624P transport width is 104.6 in. on Deere’s figure, so wide-load rules for your route come into play; the 544 P-Tier measures under the baseline on the same figure.

MachineCalculationResult
544 P-Tier2,546 mm ÷ 25.4 = 100.2 in.1.8 in. under 102 in.
624 P-Tier2,657 mm ÷ 25.4 = 104.6 in.2.6 in. over 102 in.

Source: Deere spec pages, width over standard 20.5 R25 tires, checked 2026-10-12.

That figure leaves out mirrors, fenders and attachments, so use the transport dimensions in the Deere operator’s manual. The John Deere wheel loader models guide covers the rest of the range.

📜 The Rule: 23 CFR 658.15(a) provides that no state may set a width limit other than 102 in. on the National Network, and (c) allows states to issue special-use permits above 102 in. Whether a wider load moves is a state decision. Verified 2026-10-12; eCFR current as of 10/07/2026.

Height on the trailer deck

Height over cab is 3,330 mm (131.1 in.) for the 544 and 3,400 mm (133.9 in.) for the 624. Add the trailer’s deck height, which you supply. No federal height limit was verified for this article, so the height rule comes from each state.

Federal securement for wheel loaders

📜 The Rule: 49 CFR 393.130 covers wheeled or tracked machinery of 10,000 lb or more and names front-end loaders. Paragraph (b)(2) requires an articulated vehicle to be restrained against articulation in transit. Paragraph (c)(1) requires at least four tiedowns restraining lateral, forward, rearward and vertical movement, placed per (c)(2) as close as practicable to the front and rear or at designed mounting points. Verified 2026-10-12; eCFR current as of 10/08/2026.

Both loaders exceed 10,000 lb on every weight in Section 2.

⚠️ Hazard: An articulated loader left free at the hinge can swing in transit, and a failed chain or binder can release the load onto people near the trailer, causing crush and struck-by injury. A licensed heavy-haul carrier or certified rigger plans and performs the securement.

What states do differently

🗺️ State Check: The federal baseline is 102 in.; states issue the permits and set their own thresholds. Look up your route’s width, height and weight thresholds and the issuing office.

Source: Deere spec pages, checked 2026-10-12. Both models list a bucket range of 1.9–4.0 m³ (2.5–5.25 cu yd); Deere does not name the bucket behind the heaped-capacity field.

The 70 mm pivot-pin gap means the two machines reach almost the same height, so the wheel loader size to buy turns on width, power, flow and price.

When the 544 P-Tier’s smaller footprint matters

Choose on these documented thresholds: a width of 100.2 in. against the 102-in. baseline, a list price $41,140 lower, and 4,195 lb less base weight.

When the 624 P-Tier’s extra flow and weight matter

The 624 offers 26 more horsepower (192 − 166), 11 gpm more pump flow and 0.4 m³ more heaped capacity. Deere does not publish a productivity comparison in these fields, so none is claimed here.

Buying used: serial checks, hours and the G-Tier mix-up

Read the serial and ask for the engine model

Listings show serial prefixes such as 1DW544PA (544 P-Tier), 1DW624PA (624 P-Tier) and 1YN544GA (544 G-Tier); this is an observation, not a decoding. Ask the seller for the full serial and the engine model, since Section 3 shows 2026 544 P-Tier listings that differ from Deere’s page.
